on how it applies to relationship (literally)

Your partner might say something to you today that hurts you in some way. Whatever be their motivation for saying it (good or bad), the content of their message might hurt your feelings.

That is, at first. Because as soon as the initial (and at once understandable) emotional reaction to their comment wears off, you will easily return to the self directly thereafter.

Your response to their comment, whatever it may be, will then come from the self (i.e. instead of the understandable human emotion you will have just experienced previously).

[This not actually too difficult to do. It takes but a moment of recognition to return to the self. I remind myself with a single deep breath.]
